On my way

another morning slumber
absorbing arid winds
leafy harmonies cut by
occasional sea shore sound
andante car loads
the yellow flag of New Mexico
dusting a rusted tin roof
and the unambitious dreams
of a school teacher
on an off day
no hint of peril
no desperation
no bank account
no marriage
no clue of ration cards
no amputated limbs
an old man
unlatching the door
to his sedan
using a cane to part
the moistening air
two boys pass over him
another way
hand held gadgets
blare tinny melodies
the only portent of despair
