sketches figures with a pen

reads war poems of Owen
wears a second hand sweater
newspapers pile on the chair

girls speak fast across tables
candles act as moons
inquiries, comic slips
a pretense to revelry
on each student’s lips

2nd avenue boys on roller skates
passing a puck, shouting
the noise of youth
while a hobbling sot
nears the fence

now a bicyclist in a bunny suit
leads the race—
